Two independent agency-pricing sources put a real AEO/GEO retainer for a small-to-mid-market client at $1,500 to $8,000 a month, not the $39 to $49 per client brand a tool like GetIntel charges an agency to run it. That gap between what an agency pays for the software and what the market says clients pay for the service is the actual margin. The number worth checking before you price a retainer isn't a single "typical margin" figure, it's what that figure assumes about your price point and how many client brands one subscription actually covers.
Disclosure: GetIntel is an AI visibility tool built for exactly this use case, and the cost figures below are GetIntel's own published pricing. Every other figure is attributed to its source, with the date read.
What Do Independent Sources Say Agencies Charge for AI Visibility and AEO/GEO Work?
Real retainers for AI-visibility and AEO/GEO work cluster in the low thousands per month for most businesses, scaling into the tens of thousands for enterprise engagements.
| Source | Small / entry tier | Mid-market | Enterprise |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nutshell/WebFX GEO cost guide, read 28 Aug 2026 | $1,500-$5,000/mo (small business) | $5,000-$25,000/mo (medium business) | $25,000-$50,000/mo |
| Digital Elevator AEO/GEO pricing guide, read 28 Aug 2026 | $500-$2,500/mo (productized packages) | $2,000-$8,000/mo (mid-market retainers) | $10,000-$30,000+/mo |
Both sources are marketing agencies publishing their own pricing research, not AI-visibility software vendors. Ranges are their published estimates, not quotes; treat them as planning benchmarks.
The two sources land in a similar place for the middle of the market: roughly $2,000 to $8,000 a month for a real, actively-managed program. Digital Elevator adds a specific and useful data point: it explicitly calls out $99-a-month subscriptions as "baseline SEO with AI-flavored marketing, not a substitute for a purposeful AEO program." That matters for the margin math below: an agency roster on GetIntel starts at $245 a month for five client brands, above the price point Digital Elevator dismisses, and the per-client rate is what the margin turns on.
What Does an AI-Visibility Retainer Actually Cost an Agency to Deliver?
GetIntel prices agency use per client brand rather than per subscription, on a published rate card: $49 per client brand from 5 to 9 brands, $39 from 10 to 24, and a custom rate above 25.
An earlier version of this piece flagged a contradiction here, between brand plans capped at two brands and marketing copy promising "every client brand on your roster." GetIntel has since published dedicated agency pricing, which resolves it: brand plans are for brands, and a roster is priced per client.
So the software cost is the rate card. A roster of 10 clients costs $390 a month, or $39 per client. A roster of 6 costs $294, or $49 per client. Unlike a per-subscription model, the cost per client falls as the roster grows, because the volume break applies to the whole book rather than to each subscription separately.
What Is the Real Margin on an AI-Visibility Retainer?
Margin on an AI-visibility retainer depends entirely on which client-facing price you pick, and the gap between "software cost" and "what the market says a retainer costs" is large.
| Client-facing price/mo | Cost per client (10+ roster, $39) | Margin |
|---|---|---|
| $130 | $39 | 70.0% |
| $500 (Digital Elevator's productized-package floor) | $39 | 92.2% |
| $1,000 | $39 | 96.1% |
| $2,500 (mid-market retainer floor, both sources) | $39 | 98.4% |
Margin = (price - cost) / price. Cost figure is GetIntel's own published agency rate card, read 31 August 2026, at the 10-to-24-brand tier. Client-facing prices above $130 are illustrative points inside the Nutshell/WebFX and Digital Elevator ranges cited above, not GetIntel's own pricing recommendation.
The $130 row isn't arbitrary. It's the price point that produces almost exactly the "~70% margin" figure GetIntel's own marketing pages state agencies typically keep on this line item. That figure doesn't state an assumed price or roster size anywhere it appears. Reverse-engineering it against the published $39 per-client cost lands at roughly $130 a month per client, well below even the cheapest tier either independent source reports for AEO/GEO work ($500-2,500/mo productized packages). At prices closer to what agencies are actually reported to charge, the true software-cost margin runs closer to 90-98%, not 70%.
That doesn't mean 70% is wrong. It likely reflects a lower assumed price point, additional costs beyond the software (the strategist's own time, review, client management) folded into "margin" rather than a pure cost-of-goods calculation, or both. Neither the Pricing page nor the Agencies page states which. The honest takeaway: compute your own margin from your own intended retainer price and the real, enforced brand limit, rather than anchoring on a headline percentage with an unstated assumption behind it.
How Should You Price an AI-Visibility Retainer?
As an add-on to an existing retainer, pricing AI-visibility work closer to the productized-package range ($500-2,500/mo) both sources report is defensible and still clears a wide margin over the $39 software cost per client. As a standalone service for a client with no existing retainer, the baseline-audit-plus-recurring-cycle shape described in packaging AI visibility as a service line is closer in scope to a mid-market retainer, which the same sources place at $2,000-8,000/mo.
What you charge should track what you're actually delivering, not just what the tool costs you. A baseline audit, a recurring scorecard, drafted fixes reviewed and shipped under your name, and a review call is real work on your side even when the tool does the finding and drafting. Pricing purely off the $39 cost figure, with no margin for that review and relationship work, is how a retainer becomes unprofitable the moment a client roster gets past a handful of accounts.
What Doesn't This Math Settle?
Three things worth naming before you build a pricing model on it.
- What a roster above 25 client brands actually costs, since that tier is quoted rather than published. Its own enforced plan-limits table says 2; its own pricing-page and Agencies-page copy says every client brand on the roster. The two disagree, and this piece isn't resolving which is authoritative; verify directly before assuming either reading for a real roster.
- Whether the third-party ranges reflect your specific market. Both sources' ranges are their own published research, not a survey of every agency; a specific vertical, region, or competitive category could sit outside either range.
- Labor cost. This math is software cost only. The real all-in cost of delivering this line item includes your own or your team's time reviewing drafted fixes, running the client call, and managing the relationship, none of which is in the $39 figure.
Where Did These Retainer and Margin Figures Come From?
GetIntel's own pricing figures (the $29/$79/$149 brand tiers and the $49/$39 per-client agency rate card) came from its own published pricing page. The market-rate ranges came from Nutshell's WebFX-authored GEO cost guide and Digital Elevator's AEO/GEO pricing guide, both read 28 August 2026; neither is an AI-visibility software vendor, so neither has a product to sell into this specific comparison.
