AI Share of Voice Calculator

Enter how many AI answers named each brand. The calculator gives each brand's share of voice, its mention rate and, if you add them, its first-mention rate and citation share. It shows the same counts under different denominators, side by side. Free, no signup, nothing leaves your browser.

How it works

How do you calculate AI share of voice?

AI share of voice is the part of AI answers, mentions or citations that goes to your brand instead of your competitors. It is counted across a fixed set of buyer questions. GetIntel, an AI visibility tracker, built this calculator to divide your counts three ways: by all brands' mentions (share of voice), by the answers you checked (mention rate) and, if you add them, by first mentions and citations.

Why does the denominator change the answer so much?

Because one AI answer names several brands. GetIntel's AI Software Index holds 9,978 ChatGPT and Gemini answers across 126 software categories, collected for the 6 August 2026 edition. In a median category, the leading brand appeared in 91% of answers but held only 17% of the mentions shared among that category's leaderboard of 9 or 10 brands. No category leader held more than about a quarter. In CRM software, HubSpot appears in 86% of answers, yet its share of voice among the five leading brands is 25%:

Mention rate tells you how often you show up at all. Share of voice tells you how much of the conversation is yours once competitors appear too. First mentions are the closest thing to a recommendation: across the 126 categories, the median category's most-often-first brand was named first in 40% of answers. In a GetIntel test of one brand across 60 prompts and four AI engines (10 July to 10 August 2026), its share of voice came out anywhere from 0.94% to 40% on identical data, depending only on the denominator. That study is in how to measure share of voice in generative engines.

How should you count?

Use a fixed list of buyer questions, the same engines and the same dates for every brand. Count each answer once per brand, however many times it repeats the name. Include every competitor that appears, because the share of voice column only divides among the brands you enter. Then report one number with its denominator beside it, every time. The category leaderboards in the AI Software Index show these rates for 126 categories, and GetIntel's AI visibility tracking collects the counts daily.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Count how many AI answers name each brand in a fixed set of questions, then divide one brand's count by the total for every brand you tracked. That is share of voice. Dividing the same count by the number of answers gives the mention rate instead, which is a different number. GetIntel's calculator shows both, plus first-mention rate and citation share when you enter them.

An AI answer usually names several brands, so mentions add up to far more than the number of answers. In GetIntel's AI Software Index (9,978 ChatGPT and Gemini answers across 126 software categories, August 2026), the leading brand appeared in a median 91% of answers in its category but held a median 17% of the top brands' mentions. Both numbers are correct. They answer different questions.

Pick one and state the denominator every time. Share of voice suits a competitive comparison, mention rate suits 'how often do we show up', and first-mention rate is the closest to a real recommendation. In a GetIntel test of one brand across 60 prompts and four AI engines (10 July to 10 August 2026), its share of voice ranged from 0.94% to 40% on identical data, depending only on what it was divided by.

Lower than most people expect. In GetIntel's AI Software Index (9,978 ChatGPT and Gemini answers, 126 software categories, August 2026), no category leader held more than about a quarter of the top brands' mentions, and the median leader held 17%. A brand named in most answers can still hold under a fifth of the voice when four or five competitors are named beside it.

Run a fixed list of buyer questions through the AI engines you care about and record which brands each answer names, which comes first and which sites it cites. Use the same questions each time so the numbers can be compared week to week.
