Prompt tracking is running a fixed set of prompts against AI engines and watching whether your brand gets named. Prompt research is the step before that, figuring out which prompts are actually worth the tracking budget in the first place. Skipping the second step is how you end up tracking five prompts and getting a real signal from only one of them.

What's the Actual Difference Between Tracking and Research?

Tracking answers "did AI name us on this exact question, today." Research answers "is this exact question one buyers are actually asking, at meaningful volume, in something close to these words."

They're different jobs with different failure modes. A tracking system can run perfectly, every prompt checked daily, every answer logged, and still produce a report full of noise if half the tracked prompts were never real buyer language to begin with. Research doesn't run daily and doesn't need to: it's a filtering step you do once per prompt, before it enters the tracked set, not an ongoing measurement.

The broad phrasing carries real, currently-trackable demand. The four narrower variants, each a plausible-sounding way a buyer might phrase a niche version of the same need, don't register at all in Google's own volume data. That's not because nobody has that need. It's because search-volume tools measure a specific typed phrase, and buyers phrasing a niche question tend to vary their wording enough that no single version accumulates measurable volume, even when the underlying need is real and common.

A keyword tool won't tell you AI-prompt frequency directly, nobody publishes that, but a phrase with real, sustained Google search volume behind it is a phrase real people are actually typing something close to, which is a reasonable proxy for whether it's real buyer language versus a plausible-sounding guess.

Check whether AI engines return a substantive answer to it at all. Run the candidate prompt against ChatGPT, Perplexity, or whichever engines matter to you, once, by hand. A prompt that gets a generic, hedge-everything non-answer, or an answer that doesn't name any specific brand, is telling you something different from a prompt that reliably returns two or three named products. The first is a weak candidate for a tracked slot regardless of what a keyword tool says about it.

Neither check needs to be perfect. The point is to filter obviously-empty candidates out of a generated list before they occupy a tracked slot, not to build a rigorous demand model for every possible phrasing.

What Doesn't This Volume Data Prove?
